The enthusiasm for Crimes of the Future reveals that David Cronenberg still has a loyal following more than fifty years after he began making movies. However, a large portion of those of us who believe themselves to be among their fans never learned of his work in the theatre, much less at Cannes. Instead, we discovered it at the video store; ideally, one that dedicated an entire area to his work, or at the very least to his signature genre of “body horror,” which his films would have dominated in any case. Therefore, it is appropriate that the new Cronenberg interview below takes place among shelves that are crammed with DVDs and Blu-Rays, if not the VHS tapes and Laserdiscs we grew up with.
