Nosferatu: a symphony of horror

Today in horror history: NOSFERATU was seen for the first time in 1922. Did you know: The film was loosely based on Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula,” but the characters’ names were changed in an attempt to prevent legal action (which failed).

The greatness of this film can’t be overstated. Found memories of local musician Nash the Slash scoring this bad boy live at the Bloor cinema. Also, one of my favourite courses when I was studying cinematography was a lighting course where the prof went through scene by scene, in detail, explaining all the lighting techniques in this film. Most of which was bouncing focused light off walls, ceilings, and floors. Also, heavy use of low-key lighting. One camera, one light in most cases. Simple genius. “It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart and head.” – Henri Cartier-Bresson
