Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a wonderfully strange little piece of Britain sitting at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. British pubs, red telephone boxes and English signs somehow coexist with Mediterranean weather, palm trees and views across the Strait of Gibraltar toward North Africa.
Dominating everything is the enormous Rock of Gibraltar. The Rock is riddled with caves and tunnels and is also famous for its Barbary macaques — the only wild population of monkeys in Europe. According to legend, as long as the macaques remain on Gibraltar, the territory will remain British.
Its location has made Gibraltar strategically important for centuries, but it’s the bizarre mixture of British and Mediterranean culture, spectacular geography and history packed into such a small area that makes the place so interesting.
