Sintra
Sintra looks like someone decided reality wasn’t quite interesting enough. Set among the forested hills outside Lisbon, the town is filled with extravagant palaces, old estates, gardens and architecture that ranges from romantic to downright fantastical.
It’s easy to understand why Sintra became a retreat for Portuguese royalty and aristocracy. Colourful towers, elaborate stonework and buildings seemingly emerging from the surrounding forest give the entire area an almost fairy-tale quality. It’s one of those places where pointing a camera in almost any direction produces something interesting.
These photographs are from our visit to Sintra and the remarkable sights we encountered along the way.
