Venice
Venice is one of those places that shouldn’t really work. An entire city built across a collection of small islands, connected by canals and hundreds of bridges, with boats doing the jobs normally handled by cars and trucks. Somehow it all works — and the result is unlike anywhere else we’ve travelled.
The best part of Venice was simply wandering. Get away from the busiest areas and you’re quickly lost in a maze of narrow streets, tiny bridges, canals and little squares. Getting lost here isn’t really a problem. In fact, it’s probably the best way to explore the city.
Then there are the famous sights — the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco and the extraordinary architecture surrounding St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. But Venice itself was the attraction for me. Every canal, crumbling façade and ridiculously narrow alley seemed to demand another photograph.
It’s beautiful, strange, occasionally confusing and completely unique. There really isn’t anywhere else quite like Venice.
