Tai O Fishing Village
Tai O Fishing Village on Lantau Island is one of the most distinctive places we visited during our 2013 trip to Hong Kong. The Tanka people have a long history as a fishing community in Tai O, where homes built on stilts rise above the tidal flats and waterways.
These unusual structures are linked together to form a close-knit community that essentially resides on the water. The maze of waterways, stilt houses, fishing boats and surrounding landscape made Tai O a photographer’s dream.
Below is some video I shot while boating around the village. Please excuse the shaky camera work, as I didn’t have a stabilizer with me that day. The people were incredibly friendly and we had a great lunch. It’s a shame I don’t like seafood.
