Siena
Siena is another one of those wonderfully preserved Tuscan cities where wandering through the old streets feels like stepping back several centuries. Built across a series of hills, the historic centre is a maze of narrow lanes, brick buildings, steep streets and little passages that eventually seem to lead you back toward the heart of the city.
That heart is the spectacular Piazza del Campo, the enormous shell-shaped square famous for the Palio horse race. Twice each summer, horses representing Siena’s historic neighbourhoods race around the piazza in an event that looks completely insane — and has been part of the city’s identity for centuries.
Then there’s Siena Cathedral, with its striking black-and-white striped exterior and ridiculously elaborate interior. Like so much of Tuscany, Siena seems determined to make sure you never run out of things to point a camera at.
