Copenhagen

I learned a new world that immediately needs to go in my lexicon, the Danish word Hygee.

Hygge (/ˈh(j)uːɡə/, H(Y)OO-gə; Danish: [ˈhykə]; Norwegian: [ˈhŷɡːə]) is a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes a cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality.

Like most of this trip, Copenhagen was unlike any other stop but that was by design. Everything seemed to be unique to Danish culture. Although, you’d get a smack if you drew any comparison to the Swedes. I loved how that rivalry still exists. It does seem to be good natured though. Like Canada, the Danish are big on hockey, so I never ran out of talking points. Huge bike culture, someone told me that bikes outnumber cars five to one. 90% of Danes own a bicycle. You will learn quickly walking around the city that bikes have the right of way over pedestrians. They call themselves Biking Vikings! So be afraid. I got shouted at a few times for walking into a bike lane. I’m happy I didn’t understand Danish. The streetdogs (hot dogs) are legendary in Copenhagen so I made room to try some of these. Just be careful not to order the one with herring on it. I LOVE black licorice. The Danish black licorice is second to none. Yes, I even like the salted licorice. Few do though.
